No salary raise for MPs, senators

The proposal to raise the salaries of MPs and senators has been put on hold by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva as the economy is still recovering, deputy government spokesman Watchara Kannika said on Tuesday.

"At the cabinet meeting, the prime minister ordered the Office of the Secretariat of the House of Representatives to withdraw its proposal to raise the salaries and benefits of MPs, senators, House and Senate speakers and their deputies," Mr Watchara said.

"ในการประชุมครม. นายกฯ สั่งให้สำนักเลขาธิการรัฐสภาถอนข้อเสนอการขึ้นเงินดือนและผลประโยชน์ ของเหล่า สส. สว.ม รวมถึงประธานส.ส. ประธานรัฐสภาและรองประธานด้วย"

He said the prime minister wanted the salary raise proposal to be revised because it did not suit the current economic situation.

Once revised, Mr Abhisit would consider the salary increases of MPs and senators together with local administrative organisation officials nationwide, the spokesman said.
