The concrete walls helped shield people from huge explosion that hit the restaurant they were having lunch in Narathiwat's Ba Joh district on Tuesday, a district chief who was injured in the attack said Tuesday.

Narathiwat's district chief Surachai Chawalarat said that he was having lunch with other customers when the explosives which was hidden in a pickup in the restaurant's parking lot went off.

"I believe the concrete walls that separated the restaurant's compound from the parking lot help alleviate the impact of the explosion on the people and prevent shrapnel from hitting people in the restaurant," he said.
